WWII Vintage Goatskin A-2

 Limited Edition! This outstanding A-2 is made from a recently discovered supply of mid-1940s vintage medium brown goatskin leather. This leather is the same type of goatskin used in WWII A-2s (although horsehide was the original spec leather, many WWII A-2s were produced in goatskin and cowhide by various manufacturers) and the graining & creasing of this vintage leather adds character to the overall jacket. And unlike the dark brown color of modern A-2s, the color of our Limited Edition A-2 is medium brown, a color prevalent during WWII. All in all, this is an A-2 that any AAF pilot would be proud to wear!
Other features include a snap-down collar, epaulets, two front cargo pockets (which, like the WWII A-2, does not include side-entry handwarmers), one piece back, throat latch, 100% cotton lining, and knit cuffs & waistband. The leather has a suppleness that rivals lambskin (while still retaining the inherent durability of goatskin) and is a bit lighter in weight than our standard USAF Goatskin A-2, making this the ideal 3 season jacket. The authentic details & the pedigree of the leather makes our Limited Edition A-2 the perfect jacket to adorn with your favorite WWII-era patches, and its one piece back makes it the ideal canvas for customizing with hand-painted "nose art."

WWII USAAF Crush Caps
|

This is the classic "bomber pilot" headgear, worn by USAAF pilots in Europe and the Pacific! Actually, this was the standard Army/AAF officer's dress cap, worn by pilots and non-pilots alike, but pilots gave this cap their own unique twist. Normally, this cap had stiffeners -- a support piece behind the cap device and a wire around the inside top perimeter to maintain the cap's round shape. These kept the cap in its proper, regulation military shape and angle. However, since bomber pilots wore headsets over their caps during flights, they would remove the wire stiffener to make headset wear more comfortable, causing the sides of the caps to become crushed. Eventually, the caps retained their floppy "crushed" look, giving the pilot who wore it the look of a seasoned veteran. The crush cap identified its wearer as an experiened pro, and was as much a part of his identity as his leather flight jacket.
Our Crush Caps recreate that "50 Mission" look without having to fly 50 missions! The OD green caps were worn with the winter uniform and are most often associated with the European theater, while the khaki caps were worn with the summer uniform and are most often associated with the Pacific theater. Cap includes leather visor and chin strap, buttons, and Officer's cap device. Of course, the cap looks great when worn with an A-2 flight jacket, and it's the perfect "topper" for that authentic WWII vintage look. If you want an authentic WWII A-2 jacket, horsehide is it! The original USAAF Specs -- DWC 30-1415 of Sept. 1930 -- called for Seal Brown horsehide to be the required material for this jacket. Our Signature Series™ Horsehide A-2 is constructed from supple, but tough, 3 oz. horsehide. You'll notice the natural creases, graining, scratches, range marks, and other blemishes that enhance the character of the jacket. These are not imperfections, but are naturally-occurring characteristics of horsehide leather. The specially-treated horsehide leather will begin to antique rapidly as you wear it, giving this jacket that authentic "battle-worn" look. All the original spec details are here, including: snap-down collar, collar clip, front patch pockets (no side-entry handwarmers), mil-spec brass zipper, one-piece back, and the original Seal Brown-colored horsehide leather. The Signature Series™ Horsehide A-2 has our highest recommendation! Color: original seal brown. Made in the USA. We've even included the front "watch" pocket. Don't let the low price fool you -- these khaki pants, like all the other khaki items in our Adventure Gear line, are the finest in the world. Note: the pants come with a small hem to prevent unraveling. Measure, cut, and re-hem them to your desired length. To prevent excessive shrinkage, the pants should not be placed in a dryer. Drip-dry only.

G.I. Pith Helmet

These are genuine US Military pith helmets (1940s - 1960s era), not imported reproductions. They are in unissued, brand new condition. We were lucky enough to locate a supply of these helmets in a warehouse, and are making them available to our customers. Traditionally used by the colonial forces of Europe, India, Africa and the US, it was also widely used by missionaries, archaeologists, adventurers, and anyone else living in, or traveling to, the tropics. Original pith helmets were made from pith bark, from which the helmet derives its name. Over the years, construction and materials were improved, making it one of the most practical types of hot weather headwear. Pith helmets provide excellent protection from the sun, and the adjustable one size fits all web headband allows cooling air to circulate around the top and sides of the head, aided by multiple side vents. This is the same type commonly worn by US forces stationed in the Pacific during WWII. Perfect for camping, hiking, gardening, safaris, or any other outdoor activity. Available with or without USAAF or USMC cap device. Genuine US Military-issue, in unissued condition. Simulated top vent cap and puggaree band molded into helmet. Front chin strap on brim.
